Oil face cleansing has been one of the most transformative things for my skin! Making a DIY oil cleansing face serum is a great way to transform your skin and save you money on skin care products!

What is oil face cleansing?
Have you ever heard oil dissolves with oil? Instead of using harsh soaps to remove oil, using a cleansing oil actually can do this! So instead of using a drug store product, using an oil serum or cleansing method will actually remove make-up and oil from our faces, and help to nourish our skin!
This may seem like a weird concept and it was to me too at first. However it really makes sense.
We usually carry so many oils on our faces from the environment, make up and our bodies natural oil production. Even if you are someone who struggles with acne, some of that oil production is good, and your face very much needs it to be healthy.
However, so many cosmetic companies try to help us remove all the oils from our face and at the same time stripping out the good natural oils that our face produces. They do this by using harsh sulfates, and other toxic chemicals that make matters worse over time.
I am someone who has personally struggled with acne even into my 20s and a little in my 30s. It has significantly gotten better since working to improve my PCOS hormone imbalance, and oil washing has been a part of that.
Oil face cleansing was new to me about 10 years ago, but for the past 2 years I’ve made it a permanent change!

Hormone Disrupters
In my clean living journey I have learned more and more about the hormone disrupters that are in our every day products. These hash chemicals sit on our skin, being absorbed by one of the biggest organs in our body (our skin) and enter our blood stream, causing many issues like hypothyroidism, endocrine disorders, and hormone imbalances.
This may seem like an extreme statement, but I have found this resource helpful in explaining it.
Just like I encourage people to do when wanting to eat healthier or want to eliminate sugars is to start turning the bottle over and read the ingredients. We have no idea what is in most of these products we use.
Using more natural cosmetic lines is definitely a step in the right direction. But that usually costs money!
DIY beauty products save money
Making your own beauty products is one way to remove toxins from your home and health care routines and SAVE MONEY! It is amazing how many things you can make at home. More DIY beauty products coming to you soon.
Here is an example of the price comparison:
The Imortelle Serum from DoTerra is $59. This is a 15 ml skin care product made with Jojoba Oil and a bunch of essential oils.
Homemade Serum:
- Jojoba Oil: $19.99 on Amazon for an 160 oz organic, non-GMO, 100% pure brand. This bottle will last you about a year of making your own skin care products.
- Essential oils of choice. For this example let’s use REVIVE essential oils frankincense and lavender. Lavender is $9 and frankincense is $16. These bottles will last you anywhere from 6 months to a year depending on how you use them.
- Total: $40 for essentially a year’s worth of beautiful face serum, compared to the $59 face serum from DoTerra which will last for about 3 month.
The price comparison speaks for itself. You can have beautiful natural products and on a budget when you make them yourself!

Oils to use for cleansing
When it comes to face cleansing there are a few different oils you can use based on your skin type. Here are a few recommendations:
Acne prone skin: Castor oil and jojoba oil
Dry skin: fractionated coconut oil, vitamin E oil, jojoba oil.
Anti Aging: fractionated coconut oil, vitamin E oil, jojoba oil, skin grade avocado oil or olive oil.
I have been using a 2:1 castor oil/jojoba oil ratio and my skin really likes it!
Castor oil is good for hormone balancing too!
Essential oils to use
There are different essential oils that you can add to your face serum to up the nourishing benefits. Here are some suggestions:
Frankincence
Lavender
Copiaba
Rosemary
Tea Tree (for acne prone skin).
Rose
Any combination of these is great for any skin care. I have been using rosemary, frankincense and copiaba for the last month and really love it! It smells amazing!

Oils to avoid using on the face:
Lemon
Orange
Eucalyptus
Peppermint
Citrus oils are very potent and can burn your skin. If you want to use them I would use the lowest dilution ratio, and be sure not to have immediate sun exposure after using them.
Peppermint is fine for the skin, but has a very tingling and cooling effect. I think peppermint is used better for headaches and sore muscles in terms of body use. You don’t want to get peppermint too close to your eyes.

It is very simple to make your own DIY oil face cleansing serum. Here is what you will need:
Cleansing oils of choice (see above). As mentioned I use this castor oil and jojoba oil.
Essential Oils of choice (see above). Try out REVIVE Essential Oils!
Using your funnel, pour in 2/3rds of the bottle of castor oil (or first oil of choice). Then pour in jojoba oil (or second oil choice).
If using more than 2 oils, ratio out how many of each oil you want to use and pour accordingly.
Then drop in 10 drops of each essential oil you want to use.
Done!
How to use an oil cleansing serum.
Use the dropper of the bottle and put two tubes full of oil in the palm of your hand. Then rub it all over your face and neck.
Then take a clean wash cloth and get it soaking with really hot water.
Ring it out so it’s still wet but not dripping wet.
Put it over your face and let it rest for about 30 seconds. The steam of the wash cloth will partially evaporate the oil.
Then take the wash cloth and gently wipe of the remaining oil.
Done! Your face will feel so clean, refreshed and calmed!

REVIE Essential Oils
It is something that is definitely a hard dive into the deep end of non-toxic living, especially with the cost of essential oils.
Essential oils from major retailers are SO expensive. For the average person who is looking to save money with making their own cleaning products or skin care products, essential oils from the big names don’t necessarily save money in the long run.
That is why I am so glad I found REVIVE Essential Oils. REVIVE is the same purity standards as other high end essential oil brands, is 3rd party tested, and bottled here in the US. But their pricing is much less because they don’t have a middle-man salesperson.
For example, a bottle of lavender oil at Young Living is $23, for that save quality and grade level at REVIVE it is $9. For me those price differences means the difference between being able to use essential oils more regularly and not.
You can try out REVIVE essential oils and get 10% off your first order when you use my code HARBORHOME10. And returning customers get 5% off. Giving you even more savings!
These oils have made a huge difference for me! I hope you find REVIVE a game changer for you too!
