Saving a little money on cleaning products has never been easier with these cheap DIY dust rags made with essential oils!

Should I make my own dust rags?

One of the first ways I started saving money in our home was by making my own cleaning solution! While cleaning solution at the store may seem pretty inexpensive, it is even cheaper to make them at home.

Another reason I started making my own cleaning solutions was because of the toxicity level in most cleaning products. Extreme chemicals, harsh sulfates are not only hard on your skin introducing hormone disrupters, but they also are polluting the air in your home.

Strong fragrances in cleaning products are also a sign of artificial scents and chemicals, so making your own with clean, pure essential oils is the better way to go!

Grab and go dust rag!

I love convenience just as much as the next person. I love being able to grab a quick disinfectant or cleaning rag and wipe down a surface, making my job super easy!

Well when I started eliminating toxic cleaners in my home, I missed the convenience of the disposable rags. However, these cheap DIY dust rags were my winning ticket of marrying the worlds of Convenience and healthy-living.

By making a dusting solution of water, vinegar, olive oil, and some essential oils, you can spray down a bunch of rags, store them in a air tight container and ta-da! You have ready to go dust rags to pull out when you need to dust or clean your surfaces quickly!

How to make DIY dust rags

It really is as simple as I described it above. Here are your steps:

Pour 1 cup of water into a spray bottle

Pour in 1 tbsp vinegar and 2 tbsp olive oil

Drop in 10 drops of your favorite citrus essential oils. I like to use REVIVE’s lemon, blood orange and lavender. More on REVIVE Essential Oils below.

Twist on the top and shake the solution together.

Then take 5 or 6 rags and spray each rag with the solution until is it damp, not leaving any parts dry. But not so wet that you can ring out the solution.

Store in an air tight container until you need to use them!

Now you will have a non-toxic dust rag and dusting solution!

I usually have dusting solution left over, which I like to keep in my cleaning caddy. It is a great all-purpose surface cleaner and can be used as a spray with a dry rag as well.

Pro Tip** Make sure you use these dust rags within two weeks or so. Since they are damp they can grow mold on the rags if left unused for too long. I know from experience!

Use old rags or old t-shirts as dust rags!

When I first made these I used the extra Burp clothes I had from when we had our son! Cutting them into halves or quarters made the perfect dust rag size.

REVIVE Essential Oils

I have been slowly transitioning into a non-toxic living. It is something that is defintiely a hard dive into the deep end, especially with the cost of essential oils.

Essential oils are SO expensive. For the average person who is looking to save money with making their own cleaning products or skin care products, essential oils from the big names don’t necessarily save money in the long run.

That is why I am so glad I found REVIVE Essential Oils. REVIVE is the same purity standards as other high end essential oil brands, is 3rd party tested, and bottled here in the US. But their pricing is much less because they don’t have a middle man sales person.

For example, a bottle of lavender oil at Young Living is $23, for that save quality and grade level at REVIVE it is $9. For me those price differences means the difference between being able to use essential oils regularly and not.

You can try out REVIVE essential oils and get 10% off your first order when you use my code HARBORHOME10. And returning customers get 5% off. Giving you even more savings!

These oils have made a huge difference for me! I hope you find REVIVE a game changer for you too!
