You can get all the benefits of bone broth right from your own kitchen, and for pennies compared to buying it in the store. Learn how easy it is to make your own simple instant pot bone broth.

What is Bone Broth and why is it so great?
When I first heard of bone broth, I thought “what’s the big deal? It’s just broth.” After hearing some of the health benefits of bone broth, I started to see the appeal.
Nutrients like magnesium, calcium, collagen and amino acids are in abundance in bone broth. These nutrients have many health benefits. These include:
- Healthier joints
- Promote better sleep
- Gut healing
- Skin, hair and nails (from the collagen)
- Immunity boost. Have you ever had chicken noodle soup when you were sick, and you swear you feel better after it? That’s because of the broth. There is something even more magical about homemade bone broth.
The process of making bone broth draws out all these rich nutrients, making it a powerful punch to your health.
Why make it at home? Can’t I buy it at the grocery store?
Like most produced products, they can lose their health benefits and potency when they are mass-produced. That is why I learned how to make it at home, and I haven’t turned back.
You can buy it at the grocery store, true. However, the nutritional value is minimal compared to the homemade bone broth. It’s like buying Sunny D compared to 100% pure orange juice. It’s Let me explain.
To make true bone broth, you stew bones of chicken, beef, pork or ham for many, many hours to draw out all the nutrients. When you do make it this way you will notice that there is a gelatin-like consistency that forms when it is chilled. This is the key to knowing you have gotten all those good health benefits. If the gelatin consistency is there (collagen), then so are all of those nutrients.
Now, when you buy bone broth from the store it does not have this gelatin consistency. It is just like regular chicken broth or stock. Very watery, it may be a little “foggier” in appearance. But without the gelatin-like consistency, you are basically just buying regular broth, with a higher price tag.
Cost comparison.
Most of you know by now one of the reasons I started cooking from scratch is that it can really save you some money. This is the case with bone broth as well.
To make homemade bone broth you need the bones of 1-2 rotisserie or whole chickens. Let’s assume you got these rotisserie chickens for about $5 apiece. A total of $10. When you make bone broth with these bones you will have about 1 whole gallon of bone broth (plus a cup or two more).
Bone broth at Target goes for $3.99 for 4 cups. To purchase a whole gallon of bone broth you would have to buy 4 containers, which would bring your total to just under $16 dollars before tax.
As you can see the homemade bone broth is $6+ cheaper. When you consider the fact that the store bone broth doesn’t compare to the nutritional value of real bone broth and the fact that you get two whole chickens worth of meat, the price difference is even greater.
How to Make 3 Ingredient Instant Pot Bone Broth
The process of making bone broth can take hours or days, as mentioned above. However, with an Instant Pot, this time is cut in half or down to thirds of what it would take if you were to make it on the stove.
Here are the kitchen tools you will need:
An Instant Pot (I have the larger version, and it can make about 1 gallon of broth).
A stockpot, or large soup kettle.
Fine mesh strainer
Container to store your bone broth. I use 2 half-gallon mason jars (or multiple smaller mason jars).

Ingredients
- Bones from 1-2 whole chickens (or a mix of various kinds of bones).
- 8-16 cups of filtered water.
- About 3 tbsp of apple cider vinegar.

Instructions
This is a pretty easy process:
- Place your bones in the Instant Pot container

- Drizzle the 3 tbsp of apple cider vinegar over the bones. Apple cider vinegar will help draw out all the wonderful nutrients from the bones to give us that gelatin consistancy we are looking for!
- Fill the container with the filtered water until the bones are just nearly completely covered. I like to cover mine until a few bones are stil poking out over the top of the water line.

- Put the lid on the Instant Pot, make sure it’s locked and secure. Set the value setting to “sealing.”
- Set the Instant Pot to the Soup/Broth function for 2 hours on low pressure. Repeat this time interval three more times for a total of 6 hours.

- Pro Tip: After the cooking time is up, leave the broth in the Instant Pot on the “warm” setting. This will allow more nutrients to be drawn out of the bones, giving you the gelatin consitancy once it is refrigerated.
- When your bone broth is ready to be strained, take your stock pot and pour all of the contents into the stock pot.
- Next, place your fine mesh strainer on top of the containers you are storing your broth in.
- Carefully pour the broth into mason jars (or container).
- Allow to sit on the counter for an hour or two before putting in the refrigerator.
- Done!
How long will bone broth last?
This bone broth shall last you months in the refrigerator! I have had a few cups left in the back of my refrigerator for at least 2 months, and it is still good. I have no concerns about it going bad.
